567th Transportation Company (Terminal Service)
|
The 567th Transportation Company, commonly referred to as the Pier Masters, arrived in Vietnam during August 1966 from Fort Story, Virginia, with the 71st Transportation Battalion (Terminal) and was assigned the mission of port and beach clearance within the Newport complex. During May 1969, with the activation of the US Army Transportation Battalion, Saigon (Provisional), the Pier Masters were transferred to that headquarters and relocated to Camp Davies, near Saigon. The unit was assigned the mission of cargo discharge/backload and port clearance of one military deep draft berth and berths of opportunity in the commercial port of Saigon and supervising two contract stevedore companies. During August 1969, the unit began assisting ARVN Saigon Transportation Terminal Command to train crews and, later the same year, charged ARVN with the responsibility of discharging all ships with primarily ARVN cargo--the beginning of the Vietnamization program for ports in Vietnam. During December 1969, the 567th Transportation Company was transferred to Long Binh Post for duty with the 79th Maintenance Battalion.
Also, an update from Ted Wolf (567th 66-67) noting that the 567th sent a detachment of its troops from the 2nd shore and 2nd ship platoons to Dong Tam in January of 1967. They were under the supervision of Capt.Greg initially and then LT Hunt.
